CRITICAL READING · MARTÍN FIERRO

Gaucho Life and Rural Work

The remembered countryside is both a working world and a home transformed by loss.

Reading the poem

The horse, livestock and rural work supply the language of Fierro's identity. Yet he recalls the past after being expelled from it; the pastoral memory is therefore an argument, not a neutral census of rural society.

Rather than treating Fierro as a neutral chronicler, distinguish the fictional speaker, the historical setting and modern interpretation. This reading is an editorial guide, not an original section of the poem.

Discussion question

What work does Fierro describe, and who remains absent from his remembered landscape?
