November 10: Tradition Day

José Hernández was born on November 10, 1834. Buenos Aires Province established the observance through Law 4,756 in 1939. National Law 21,154, enacted in 1975, established Tradition Day throughout Argentina. The date honors the traditions passed down through generations: music, stories, regional customs, crafts, and community life.

December 6: National Gaucho Day

This date recalls the publication of Hernández's El gaucho Martín Fierro in 1872. Law 24,303, passed on December 15, 1993 and published on January 10, 1994, officially designated December 6 as National Gaucho Day. It recognizes the gaucho's role in Argentina's rural history and cultural identity.

What does Martín Fierro have to do with both dates?

Hernández's poem portrays the voice of a gaucho confronting conscription, injustice, loss and exile. Its two parts appeared in 1872 and 1879. Tradition Day recalls the author's birth and the nation's inherited customs; National Gaucho Day focuses on the gaucho and the literary milestone associated with the poem. They are complementary, not interchangeable.
